Roles

Karma has three roles — Owner, User, and Admin — plus five additional permissions that can be assigned on top of any role. Here's how they work.

How to manage roles

Go to Roles in the dashboard. Each team member has an Edit button to manage their individual settings. You can also select multiple users at once using the checkboxes and apply bulk changes — for example, enabling or revoking Accept karma, Moderation, or Personal unlimited karma across the whole selection at once.

Roles and their abilities

Owner

The highest role. Owners have the broadest set of permissions by default:

• Change user roles
• Manage groups
• Access billing
• Delete data (available to Owners only)
• See other users' profiles

Owners can also assign themselves additional permissions — Moderation, Rewards Fulfilment, and Personal Unlimited Karma — to approve or decline karma requests, receive reward notifications, and give unlimited karma.

Admin

• Change user roles
• Manage groups
• See other users' profiles

Admins have the same role management capabilities as Owners but cannot delete data or access billing by default.

User

Regular users have no access to settings or roles by default. Owners and Admins can grant them additional permissions individually — see Additional permissions below.

Additional permissions

These can be assigned to any user regardless of their base role.

• Accept karma — the user can receive karma from others. Enabled for all users by default. Uncheck this to prevent a specific user from receiving karma — for example, bots or service accounts.
• Moderation — the user can approve or decline karma requests. When granted, the user also gains access to the Roles tab. Make sure the Permissions setting under Security also reflects who can edit roles.
• Rewards fulfilment — the user receives emails when rewards are redeemed and is responsible for fulfilling them.
• Rewards access — the user can redeem rewards.
• Personal unlimited karma — the user can give as much karma as they want, regardless of the workspace's karma limit.
• Group admin — the user can create and manage groups.
• Billing access — the user can access the billing page.
